The Week That Was: September 5, 2008

And the week's not over yet, folks. It was announced a couple days back that the promos Britney Spears did with wild-weaved U.K. comic Russell Brand for Sunday's MTV VMAs wouldn't be the extent of her participation...she's also going to "open" the show.

Of course, it hasn't been specified how she'll open—by singing (God, no!) or by giving Miley Cyrus a lap dance. But, as we all know, even when she's so, so bad at the VMAs, at least Britney's always memorable.

Here are pics of Katy Perry from the set of her new video "Hot N Cold."

A rabbit could have squeaked over this song and I'd still like it, since it's a Max Martin/Dr. Luke collaboration.

Do you ever get that—where you like a song because of the producers or the sound, but could care less about who sings it? Some people don't get it when you try to explain that to them. Sheesh.

Perry seems to have escaped the dreaded one hit wonder trap, as "Hot N Cold" made a giant leap to #20 on Billboard's Hot 100 this week.

The latest issue of U.K. mag lifestyle and culture mag Pop celebrates the 1980s with pieces on both the Pet Shop Boys and Grace Jones. Worrapolava's got all the sordid details.

Saint Etienne's CD/DVD/hardcover book combo London Conversations: The Best Of Saint Etienne is out September 29 (order here).

Meanwhile, Sarah Cracknell has turned down free botox:
The producers of Bands Go Pop! want to provide physical training, cosmetics and even cosmetic surgery for "bands who provided the soundtrack to our youth but who now for whatever reason no longer look like the poster picture that once adorned the walls of the nations teenagers." According to Popbitch, they naturally decided to offer their services to St. Etienne, who understandably declined.
You mean Sarah actually has some dignity? What's wrong with her?!

So, this is "Now Or Never," the first single (up this week on iTunes) from High School Musical 3. Is it me or does that intro sound like a certain recent Madonna hit?
