Depeche Mode And Pet Shop Boys Make An Impact

Nothing much new going on with the Billboard Hot 100 this week, although doesn't it seem like it's taking Britney Spears' "If U Seek Amy" (at #19...again) forever to move up? It feels like it should've started sliding down the chart by this point, but, no—Brit's still hanging in there in the somewhat limbo of the lower Top 20.

One other single worth noting is Kelly Clarkson's "I Do Not Hook Up," which moves up 42 positions to #46. Although, I'm starting to wonder whether I like this one just by default of there not being any other good songs in the chart right now?

Anyway, the week's big news would be over on the album chart, where Depeche Mode, and the Pet Shop Boys see their highest entries in over a decade with Sounds Of The Universe (#3) and Yes (#32), respectively.

You can't help recognizing how it's more of a symbolic, if not hollow, victory, given how dismal album sales have become.

A Little Bit Of Little Boots Coming To The States

Like La Roux, British electro broad Little Boots will be getting a U.S. EP release ahead of a full album.

The five-track Illuminations is to be made available via Elektra on June 6, and will include "rare and exclusive tracks" for the U.S., as well as her current U.K. single "New In Town" (XO's video summation here) and the song "Stuck On Repeat."

Elektra plans to release the full Little Boots album Hands later this year. Also, if you're in the New York area, she'll be playing a one-off gig at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on May 18.

UPDATED: Pet Shop Boys Land Their Highest-Charting U.S. Album Since 'Very'

The Pet Shop Boys' 10th studio set Yes has charted at #32 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums according to MTV, making it their highest-placed record since Very hit #20 in 1993.

Yes also marks Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe's first Top 40 album in the States since Bilingual made #39 in 1996.

The PSBs' last album, Fundamental, reached #150 in the U.S., selling around 5,000 copies in its first week. Yes apparently moved about 14,000 copies.

In some ways you probably have to chalk it up to great reviews from prominent magazines such as Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone and Spin, and interviews with places like CNN. Oh, and the music, of course. (And my incessant blogging about them. Ha.)

A new interview with the Pet Shop Boys went up yesterday on the Village Voice website.

SIDE NOTE: Yes is now the fourth highest-charting album in America from the Boys, following Please (#7, 1986), Actually (#25, 1987) and Very (#20, 1993).

Kelly Rowland's Still Working!

Just when Kelly Rowland had been given the commercial flush by her label, along comes her "featuring" stint on David Guetta's new single "When Love Takes Over" (the radio edit of which was added to online digital download stores today).



Is it me or does the vocal melody have shades of Jordin Sparks' "No Air"?

Remix EPs for "When Love Takes Over" will be added to iTunes next Tuesday. David Guetta's next album will be released in August via Astralwerks here in the U.S.

And lest you worry that Kelly won't be getting any work in the near future, her new gig as a judge on Bravo's Project Runway "replacement" The Fashion Show—where she'll star opposite Isaac Mizrahi—begins on May 7.

It's Not Fair How Many Dumb Dumbs Are Out There, Right Lily Allen?

After a 24-hour bout with what was either swine flu, malaise or just plain lazy assed-ness, D'luv is back to banging out the trash.

One notable video and single that's gotten a tad glossed over is Lily Allen's second offering from It's Not Me, It's You—"Not Fair."

Lesser-informed folks who've got head firmly up arse (if you can believe it, not actually a reference to Lily) would have you believe "Not Fair" is a flop. And if you're using the pretzel logic that having a single enter the U.K. Top 10 at #10 one week, then climb to #9 the next while the album that spawned it is catapulted back into the Top 5 is a flop, then, well, flopsville it is.

Alas, that's simply not the case, and "Not Fair"—not officially released a a single till May 11, mind you—has given Lily her fifth U.K. Top 10 hit.

Anyway, as previously noted round these parts, I'm on board with Lily Allen this album. Chalk it up to the bangs and face glitter.



And in a bit of decent timing, it's been announced that Lily will be playing Austin City Limits this year, possibly ensuring a third D'luvvly pilgrimage to Texas this September.

MySpace And I Broke Up

So yesterday I deleted my MySpace account. Well, it was the Chart Rigger MySpace account...I'd axed my own personal one about two years ago.

I couldn't even remember the last time I'd logged into MySpace. Social networking is grand and all, but music-based last.fm and Twitter are much sexier.

MySpace was like dealing with a high-maintenance bitch who wouldn't put out. Or if they did, it was about as exciting as masturbating into the sink.

Speaking of which, gotta run....

Who Had The Better 'Number 1'?

U.K. grime stud Tinchy Stryder hits the top of the British chart this week with "Number 1." Catchy jam, that one, no doubt owing to the "featuring" of N-Dubz.

But this of course makes me think of Goldfrapp's 2005 single "Number 1," which, incidentally, only reached #9. Even classier, there's the #6-charting "Number One" which spun off from kiddie show Tweenies in 2000.



Golly, I'm not sure which of these treasures is the best? Right now I'm thinking the Tweenies' packs a bit more of an emotional wallop.

Over on the album chart, Depeche Mode's Sounds Of The Universe debuts at #2. That's not Number 1.

Take That Had Better Sex It Up With Their Upcoming Book Of Photos

Take That are getting ready to tour through Europe this summer, and now it's been announced that a two-volume book of photos will be published in October celebrating the band's 19-year history.

Says the Take That Appreciation Pages: "The images will include personal pictures, previously unseen images from the Take That archive, as well as specially commissioned, stunning new photography. The accompanying text will be written by the band."

That's great, but there better be plenty of this...

An EP's Worth Of New Material (Including A Richard X Mix) On Next Pet Shop Boys Single

In the liner notes for one of the Pet Shop Boys' Further Listening remastered albums—either Introspective or Bilingual, I can't recall which—Neil Tennant says the duo is always coming up with great ideas for EPs, but their label always shoots them down. But their second single off Yes, "Did You See Me Coming?" would actually make a great EP, given all the goodies included.

Naturally, that won't happen, and all extras are getting spread over no less than three digital bundle singles, two CDs and a 12" vinyl release.

Out in the U.K. on June 1, "Did You See Me Coming?" will contain in its various formats a 12" mix (Yay!), the "Unicorn Kid Mix," three B-sides ("After The Event," "The Former Enfante Terrible" and "Up And Down"), their Brits medley and a Richard X mix of Yes track "The Way It Used To Be."

UPDATE: (From April 24) Chris Lowe says on Twitter, "Just finished our new mix of 'Did you see me coming?' It's got a lot of new vocals, both spoken and sung."

The video for "Did You See Me Coming?" was shot yesterday in London, with former Jesus And Mary Chain member Douglas Hart directing.

Yes was released in the U.S. this week. So far, it's reached #10 on the iTunes Store's top albums ranking, and #6 on Amazon's best-sellers list.

Green Day And Kelly Clarkson: It's Like The Old Days All Over Again

I like Green Day. I really do. There have been some shrieks that their upcoming album 21st Century Breakdown (out May 15) is just more of the same territory they covered on 2004's American Idiot. Good! That was a sweet album, and one of my favorites through fall '04 and early '05.

When Chart Rigger first started back in 2005, I used to hope "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" would get to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. That single was the subject of D'luv's first ever roundup of the Billboard chart.

Alas, like Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," it was held at #2 for a stretch by some 50 Cent trash or other.

Anyway, Green Day's new one, "Know Your Enemy," debuts this week at #40. It's not great, but still better than a lot of garbage on the chart right now.

Kelly Clarkson's "I Do Not Hook Up" debuts at #88, as well. It's like 2005 all over again. Now all we need is some new music from Crazy Frog.

My Teenage Life In Concert T-Shirts

It's Earth Day, and since my parents recently sent me a package of all my old concert tees from the early '90s, I thought I'd recycle them for a bit of comedy and nostalgia here. I used to buy these f-ing things in XL. Meanwhile, I was the scrawniest teen ever.

Some of these I'm throwin' on eBay. I'd better make at least three bucks!

That one in the pic above is from the Depeche Mode concert on their Violator tour, June 1990, at the Coca Cola Star Lake Amphitheater (now the Post-Gazette Pavillion) just outside Pittsburgh, PA. I was 16 then.

The B-52s at the now torn-down Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh. Feb. 1990 (Age 15). My first concert, just a few days before my 16th birthday.

Erasure at Jones Beach, Long Island, NY. August 1990 (Age 16). I was visiting my grandparents and heard an interview with Andy Bell on the radio. My grandma generously bought me a ticket. I later found out she stood at her car dancing in the parking lot the entire time. It was the very last show of the Wild! world tour.

Pet Shop Boys Performance tour, 1991. (Age 17) Unfortunately, I didn't get to see this live; the closest they came was Washington D.C. (a four-hour drive). I ordered the shirt through the mail. It still fits like a tent. I had to look like a complete tool in this back then.

U2, Zoo TV world tour at Three Rivers Stadium (also gone), Pittsburgh. August 25, 1992. (Age 18) My first week of college.

UB40 at I.C. Light Amphitheater. Pittsburgh. August 8, 1993 (Age 19). Really fun concert, and a great summer as I remember. The tee's in rough shape now. Promises And Lies had just come out, and "Can't Help Falling In Love" had been #1 for like three zillion weeks.

Interesting Marketing Tactic For New Pet Shop Boys Album, 'Yes'

The new Pet Shop Boys album Yes is released today in North America and several other countries—including China, where apparently the song "Legacy" has been reduced to an instrumental due to it's "controversial" political lyrics.

Interestingly, either Astralwerks (an imprint of Capitol Records/EMI) or the Boys themselves have removed the duo's albums Actually, Behaviour and hits collection Discography (i.e., the LPs with their biggest hits in the States) from U.S. iTunes today, as well.

Perhaps it's a bid to get those seeking out "Always On My Mind" or "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" to opt instead for their new album?

At least Very is still available. Who could live without that one?

Lady GaGa Takes On Coldplay's "Viva La Vida"

Lady GaGa covered Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" for U.K. Radio 1's "Live Lounge" program. Pretty cute, though she fumbles the words a bit—and uses creative license in adding a few of her own!

The "be my Chris and I'll be your Gwyneth bit" does make me want to put firecrackers up her thong after about the third time, though.

Well, There's Always the Second Frankmusik Single To Look Forward To, Right?

Vincent Frank, aka Frankmusik—aka(#2) the most wanked-over artist this year by music bloggers—probably fell backwards over his Korg, knocked it into the drapes, sent the curtain rod flying off it's hinges and crashed through the glass after seeing the U.K. chart positions today.

The 23-year-old's major label debut single "Better Off As Two" came in at...suspenseful drumroll...a less-than-astounding #26. Goodness! Will Frankmusik go the way of Lorraine, Same Difference, and all others who got flushed into obscurity's sess pool following a lone, poorly-charting first single?

Ah, Britain, thou art a cruel lady. However, faring much better in the electronic music department is La Roux, who continue to claw their way toward the top with "In For The Kill" (this week to #2).

Oh, well. Cheer up, Frankmusik fans...you'll always have this picture of his butt to remember.

Anyway, below is a classy exchange that happened on my Towleroad column this week, which led off with Frankmusik.

From reader Crispy: "Another week, another UK act no one's heard of here in the States."

Now, granted, maybe I should have mentioned in the column that Frankmusik is going to have a release in the States at some point, allegedly. And this is, like, how you get to hear of new-ish artists.

Anwyay, a classic response came from "John", who I'm assuming isn't John of Pop Music Notes fame:

"I've loved Frankmusik for a few months now. Thanks for posting this.What is it with negative twits posting on this site? Actually, quite a few Americans have heard of Frankmusik. Crispy, not all Americans are antisocial pscyhopaths living in their parents' basement; some are actually social, enjoy dance music and are grateful when new music is introduced to them. Just go eat Cheetos and play warcraft already. Loser!"

Well, maybe that didn't grab your rocks like it did mine. So then we turn to Entertainment Weekly, who this week have reviewed the Pet Shop Boys' new album, Yes (which is finally released in the States on Tuesday).

Says the enthusiastic, B+ write-up:

"When the economy finally kicks the last velvet-rope VIP down to the breadline, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe will remain in their hot tubs, counting their gold."

Hurrah! That's pretty classy. Well, then Neil Tennant brought it all down to reality a bit by posting on the PSBs official site today:

"Fed up with people telling me they've downloaded our album for free from some site but 'Don't worry, I'm going to buy a copy!' What a weak industry this is."

Hey, Neil, I bought it!

But, sadly, I bet Little Fucker didn't. He probably pirated the shit out of it then banged some strippers during recess.

Shayne Ward's Website Is Run About As Well As His Last Album's Marketing Campaign

The Xenomania fansite Twittered today that hottie X Factor winner Shayne Ward has been working with the British producers. Shayne himself posted this on his blog three days ago. But who's reading that site?

Seriously, that above is the main image greeting Shayne's legion of fans who are eager to rip off his jeans and play "microphone tickle."

Didn't Breathless come out about three Sugababes albums ago? Shayne, get thee a better webmaster.

Anyway:

I went to Stockholm last week to record an amazing track with Quiz & LaRossi. Was great to be back - I love the city and I'm looking forward to finishing the vocals - it's a great track that I'm really excited about. Ur gonna love it! I've also been spending time writing and recording with the amazing Xenomania - the guys behind some of Girls Aloud and Sugababes biggest hits. When I was recording with them I stayed in oldest room in the hotel nearby, the Henry VIII room - huge four poster bed, real old looking and I swear it was haunted! Was really spooky! Bring on Most Haunted, that would be mint!

Quiz & LaRossi is exciting, too. Hopefully this next album sounds like The Saturdays. And gets more than two single releases. That would be mint!

In Case You Were Mildly Curious About The Erasure Box Set (Yeah, It's Worth It)

Finally got around to picking up Erasure's Total Pop!: Deluxe Box—40 Hits today. Nice pictures in the extremely lengthy booklet inside, though the text inside never really manages to sum up the experience of growing up with Erasure as a large chunk of your formative teenage-years soundtrack.

How could it?
Disc two is the real winner, because, well, most of us already have or had the first Pop! at some point, no? The remastering is super, by the way.

I think if I were held at gunpoint given the option to choose only 10 singles off this collection to be able to ever hear again, they'd be:

I also wish great album tracks like "Home" off Chorus and "Miracle" from I Say, I Say, I Say were on here. But "Miracle" is on the DVD, from a May '94 appearance on Later With Jools Holland!

Finale note: Hearing "I Love Saturday" and "Stay With Me" fully remastered, on great speakers, will blow you away. Trust me.

I'm in complete denial that the Black Eyed Peas are still #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Boom Boom Pow"... and that six songs from the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack are in the chart.

When Music Starts To Suck, Go Back To Suede And McAlmont & Butler

Children, long before Bernard Butler was crafting much of Duffy's award-winning album Rockferry, he was songwriting/playing guitar for two of the most flamboyant frontmen of the past 16 or so years: Suede's Brett Anderson and David McAlmont.

But this isn't a tired history lesson. Rather, during these lulls in good music—when the Black Eyed Peas and Rascal Flatts are #1—I tend to reassess some of the "oldies" in my D'luvvly music collection.

McAlmont & Butler's two albums have now been added to U.S. iTunes. Below is the clip for their 1995 live performance of "Yes"—considered by some to be legendary—on Later With Jools Holland, as well as my fave Suede single, "Stay Together," from Top Of The Pops in early '94 (Brett appears to be singing live atop an instrumental track).

How Ashley Tisdale Should Be Marketing Herself

Ashley Tisdale, your new single "It's Alright, It's OK"—produced by Swede team Twin—sounds like Miley Cyrus singing Pink's "So What." And it was made available to download on iTunes and Amazon's MP3 store today.



I'm pretty disappointed, because the Tizz has always seemed so innovative and cutting edge to me. How'd she get behind the curve all of a sudden? I'd maybe buy this if she changed her name to Ashley Tixxxdale, and offered a free photo of her scream box with every download. I mean, voilà, instant hit, right?

But your money is better spent on the new Pet Shop Boys album Yes, which is now on iTunes for pre-order. Also, La Roux's new "Quicksand" EP was added today.

La Roux's Show In L.A. Last Night: The Guy On Keyboards Was Quite Foxy

Above is a pic of La Roux's Elly Jackson (yanked with gratitude from the La Roux Blog) on the set of the video shoot for "Bulletproof," the U.K. synth-pop act's next single. Currently the band are #4 on the U.K. singles chart with "In For The Kill."

"Bulletproof" is super poptastic, and I know this because I caught La Roux doing a short set at The Roxy here in L.A. last night. What made the gig all the more enjoyable was scruffy-cute "Mikey" on keyboards. (Strangely, the official other half of La Roux, Ben Langmaid, was nowhere to be seen.)

Based on songs played last night like "Colourless Colour," "I'm Not Your Toy," "Fascination" and "Tigerlily," La Roux's Yaz(oo)-inspired album is gonna be heavily rotating in the car D'luv this summer, upon its June release.

People Kind Of Dislike Calvin Harris, Don't They?

I'm not one of those people, though. Calvin Harris' first album I Created Disco was waiting for me, having arrived from Amazon UK, when I got back from a trip to France in late spring 2007. It was a great soundtrack to that summer.

Now "I'm Not Alone," the lead single off his upcoming sophomore album, has topped the U.K. chart. It's a nice, moody club track with a borderline misogynistic video.



Calvin appeared as a "featuring" on Dizzee Rascal's U.K. #1 "Dance Wiv Me" last summer (which he co-wrote and produced). He also co-produced Kylie Minogue's "In My Arms," which (just barely) became the singer's most recent U.K. Top 10 hit last May.
